Body mass index (BMI) compares weight with height. It is a screening tool that can help start a conversation about health; it does not diagnose a condition or directly measure body fat.
The CDC uses the following categories for adults age 20 and older:
| BMI | Category |
|---|---|
| Below 18.5 | Underweight |
| 18.5 to below 25 | Healthy weight |
| 25 to below 30 | Overweight |
| 30 or higher | Obesity |
These are screening categories, not a complete assessment of an individual’s health. See the CDC’s adult BMI category guidance.
Use the CDC Adult BMI Calculator to enter your height and weight. For children and teens ages 2 through 19, BMI is interpreted differently, using age and sex; adult categories should not be used.
BMI cannot distinguish muscle, bone, and fat or show where body fat is distributed. A healthcare professional considers BMI alongside medical history, blood pressure, examination findings, and relevant laboratory results. Learn more in the CDC’s explanation of BMI.
A BMI result alone should not determine a treatment plan or a weight goal. If you have questions, discuss your circumstances with your healthcare professional.
